Cassandra might have the most complicated back story of any romance heroine. She is the ex-wife of a jailed drug lord; the mother of a murdered child; and a voodoo priestess living in the witness protection program. Yes, it's over the top. Oddly, the part that is most unbelievable about all of this is that there is no explanation about how she got the information required to testify against her ex-husband. Supposedly she went from knowing nothing about her husband's drug empire to being the one to take it down.

This is the first time I have enjoyed a book when I didn't like the premise. Cassandra's whole raisin d'etre is to learn enough voodoo so that she can raise her daughter from the dead. Ick.

Handeland manages to come up with an interesting plot, much of which is set in Haiti. The adventurous story had a Romancing the Stone feel.

I liked the idea of Devon Murphy. He was definitely an unusual hero, speaking with multiple accents. Devon has had a hard luck life and hasn't amounted to much. The love, while steamy, is of the insta-variety and stays at a rather superficial level. There is nothing to indicate how these to will fare together. What kind of job is our hero to have given that his best skill is as a thief?

Great books, daughter loves them. Highly recommend this series to anyone. She has already read all of these books and is awaiting more like them!
So good that it made it into my collection - I love romance & adventure - with a paranormal twist & her specs on this world stand up very well.

Another great book Lori! Finally a book about Priestess Cassandra! Full of ups and downs. The sadness of loosing her daughter has driven Cassandra to do anything to bring her back! Insert Devon the wayward thief/ guide and anything could happen!
Cassandra has a new life now. And she is assighed to find the ways to raise zombie's. It will be the only way to break to curse set on her best friends husband and his son. And the only way will be to raise the voodo goddess that first put this curse on the husbands father. But she has "other" reasons to want to find out how to gain this talent. She wants to bring back her dead daughter. But in her travels she is beginning to understand that even if she can do this will her daughter really be that little girl again,and is she sure that this is something that she should be doing. To confuse her more she meets the man who is going to take her to find the sorrcoress that has this ablity. He is not your usual guy. long sun bleach hear with fleathers and beans mixed in and a body that is so unlike anything she is use to. and she's also beginning to get 'those'feeling back. Feeling she thought she would never have again. So they go off to find her answers and get back to brake the curse and then she can go back to Calilforia to bring back her daughter. Now she just has to find this place and not get killed or lost or possibly even trapped there forever. Did I mention that cassandra is also a voodoo prestiess. With some pretty interesting powers herself. Its a roller coaster ride of emotions and pain. No one said life was easy.

you get so involved with the characters that at times you do feel the pain of lossing a child and also how hard it is to not feel that if has been a better mother she could and should have been able to prevent the loss of her little girl
