Anyone who faces a diagnosis of cancer has a story. Some writers make a lot of it, getting into relational, spiritual, philosophical issues. But this author just simply tells how the diagnosis affected her, her family and friends--just the essentials. In her story there is an underlying faith and confidence, knowing that "life goes on." So I appreciate her straight-forward, low-emotional telling of her story, her treatment and her recovery. I also like the tidbits of her life in Australia. Some might call this "a garden-variety memoir." We grow flowers in our garden for just that reason--not for the gorgeous and extravagant flowers of Versailles of France or Butchart Gardens of British Columbia. But to have common flowers that lift our spirits in our everyday journey of challenges and joys. That's the purpose of this short book.
The author wrote this about a year after her surgery and 10 months after her treatment ended. She concludes: "Of course, if I had a choice, I would not have chosen to have breast cancer. It has been a stressful, anxious, often painful, and always uncomfortable period....Good sometimes comes out of misfortune, and often in unexpected ways." Anyone facing a similar challenge in life will be encouraged.

Dangerous Journey Marie HarlechJones 9780980810714 Books Reviews
If this author were a friend or a relative, I would have found her story interesting. It is written conversationally, almost casually, documenting her discovery and successful treatment of a cancer caught early. There is nothing dramatic here, nothing out of the ordinary, or particularly memorable. The last quarter of the book is devoted to describing the author's community activities with fellow cancer sufferers and survivors. I read the entire book (which is more like a personal essay) in an hour.
The value of this book probably lies more in its healing potential for the author than for enlightening a reader about an encounter with cancer. I respect the author (and anyone else) who courageously records a personal experience and shares it with readers. The act of writing is a healing tool, apart from any medical procedure. Reading stories like this validates the efforts of the author, and for that, I cannot give a negative review. Read this book because it has a good ending, it's short, free, and easy.
